Clark and Mahorcic Lead Pack to Win over Elon
11/19/2022 3:58:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NC State duo combined for 30 points and 23 rebounds in win
RALEIGH – The NC State Men's Basketball team never trailed in the final 35 minutes of Saturday's game against Elon, but could never break the game open either as the Pack held off the Phoenix, 74-63, inside PNC Arena.
Jack Clark and Dusan Mahorcic led the way for the Pack as both players finished just shy of recording a double-double.
Clark led the Wolfpack in scoring, finishing with 21 points, his highest total since transferring to NC State, and nine rebounds. Mahorcic had a game-high 14 rebounds – the most by an NC State player in the young season – and nine points.
Terquavion Smith added 16 points and Casey Morsell finished with 15.
A strong defensive effort guided the Pack to a victory in the final contest of its four-game homestand to start the year, holding Elon to 38.3 percent from the field, including 29.2 percent from beyond the arc.
Despite what was a tightly-contested game throughout its entirety, NC State only trailed for a total of 46 seconds, all of which came less than five minutes into the contest. While the Phoenix cut NC State's lead to as few as five points on four occasions in the second half, the Pack answered each time with a basket of its own to widen the margin and retake control. NC State's largest lead on the day was 13 points, which came early in the second half after one of Smith's four made three-pointers.
While an intense zone from Elon limited the Pack's ability from three, the Wolfpack found opportunity in the paint in the second half with Clark and Mahorcic taking advantage.
Tying Smith's team-high four assists was Jarkel Joiner who made his way onto the stat sheet with seven points.
Torrence Watson led Elon with 20 points while Max Mackinnon added 11. NC State entered the game forcing its opponents into an average of 19 turnovers per game but the Phoenix turned it over just nine times as the Pack had a season-low six steals.
NC State will now shift its focus to the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas. The eight-team tournament is set to begin at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23 when the Pack takes on reigning national champion Kansas. The game will be broadcast on ESPN and will serve as the opener for the three-day event.
