RALEIGH – NC State women's basketball (4-0) rounded out its four-game, season-opening home stretch with a well-balanced effort as five Wolfpack players scored in double figures in the team's 96-48 victory over Charlotte (2-1) on Thursday night.
The Pack shot an efficient 56.5 percent (39-of-69) overall and 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from three-point range. It marked the team's highest shooting percentage since Feb. 13, 2022 (.574 at Duke) and best three-point mark since Nov. 14, 2021 (.647 versus Towson). Six players contributed to the team's season-high 11 three pointers, highlighted by three apiece from Diamond Johnson and Madison Hayes.
Hayes (15 points) and Johnson (11 points) were two of the Wolfpack's double-figure scorers, with Hayes' number marking a new career-high as she missed just one shot. Jada Boyd tied that scoring mark with a season-high 15 of her own, and Jakia Brown-Turner (11 points) and River Baldwin (10 points) rounded out the team's top scorers.
Baldwin also finished just shy of a double-double with nine boards.
NC State used the last few minutes of the first quarter and a defensively stifling second quarter to build up a lead of over 20 that Charlotte never ate into in the second half. The teams traded buckets to start, marking the first time in this early season that the Wolfpack has trailed, but a Diamond Johnson three at the 3:50 mark of the first started a 20-0 run for NC State that also spanned the first three minutes of the second quarter.
In that span, NC State knocked down four three pointers to continue to pile on first-half points. Charlotte, meanwhile, started the game shooting 6-of-10 into the first official timeout but went 3-of-24 from the field for the remainder of the first half.
The teams both scored 17 in the third quarter, and NC State dominated the fourth quarter by a 30-8 margin to put an exclamation mark on the 48-point victory.
The Wolfpack will hit the road for the first time in 2022-23 for a top-10 matchup at fifth-ranked UConn. The game will be played at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn., with live television coverage provided by FS1. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
