HARTFORD, Conn. – Tenth-ranked NC State women's basketball (4-1) suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling 91-69 to fifth-ranked UConn (3-0) in its first ranked clash of the 2022-23 campaign.
Four Wolfpack players ended the outing in double figures - Diamond Johnson (14), Jakia Brown-Turner (11), Madison Hayes (10) and Jada Boyd (10). River Baldwin led the team on the boards with nine rebounds.
NC State was forced into a timeout less than three minutes into the game after the Huskies jumped out to an early lead. The Wolfpack battled back and cut a 12-point deficit early in the second quarter to a three-point deficit late in the period, but UConn knocked down the last two buckets of the half to lead by seven (40-33) after 20 minutes.
In the third quarter, NC State started eating away at UConn's advantage. The Wolfpack brought the game within six points twice, including as late as the 4:40 mark off a Hayes three, but the Huskies answered with a three of their own on the other side. Their triple started out what was a 15-2 third quarter-closing run to put UConn up 19 (66-47) headed into the fourth quarter. The Wolfpack never got closer than 17 in the final period.
Azzi Fudd led UConn in scoring with 32 points.
NC State continues its stretch of games away from home as it makes the trip to Cancun, Mexico, for the 2022 Cancun Challenge. The Wolfpack will take on Vanderbilt on Thursday, Nov. 24 and West Virginia on Friday, Nov. 25, with both contests set for 4 p.m. starts on FloHoops.
