CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The NC State women's soccer team concluded its road trip with a 2-0 defeat at No. 5 North Carolina on Sunday afternoon at Dorrance Field.
NC State (7-5-3, 2-4-0 ACC) closed out its three-game road trip against the Tar Heels and will return to Dail Soccer Stadium for its next two matches, finishing its regular-season home slate against Miami (Oct. 15) and Louisville (Oct. 20).
North Carolina (11-3-0, 4-2-0 ACC) scored a pair of goals within five minutes to capture the ACC victory, ending the first half with a goal in the 43rd minute before opening the second half with the Tar Heels' second tally in the 46th minute.
Wolfpack goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta recorded a career-high 10 saves on the afternoon, registering three stops in the opening 45 minutes before making seven saves in the final half.
In the first half, NC State broke quickly in the 13th minute after Alexis Strickland forced a turnover at midfield, laying off the ball to Leyah Hall-Robinson before a low cross found the foot of Fernanda Soto who just missed to the left side of North Carolina's goal.
The Wolfpack increased pressure in the attacking third in the final 15 minutes when Hall-Robinson blasted a shot on target from just inside the 18-yard box. North Carolina goalkeeper Emmie Allen punched Hall-Robinson's attempt to the left to keep the Pack off the board.
NC State then sent a dangerous free kick into the box following a yellow card on UNC's Avery Patterson, nearly finding the head of defender Jenna Butler for a close-range effort.
North Carolina logged its first goal of the match off a corner kick when Emily Murphy gave the Heels a 1-0 halftime lead. Patterson then doubled the home side's lead 37 seconds into the second half with an effort from outside the box.
Hall-Robinson, Soto and Strickland each recorded a shot in Sunday's match with Strickland and Hall-Robinson's efforts landing on target.
