Chmiel Garners ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Honors, Twelve Named to All-ACC Academic Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. - NC State junior Kelsey Chmiel has been named the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
With Chmiel's honor, NC State has tabbed the honor for three-straight seasons (Elly Henes in 2019, Hannah Steelman in 2020).
Twelve of NC State's cross country student-athletes have garnered All-ACC Academic honors. Three men and a program-record nine women received the accolades.
Chmiel earned a pair of postseason individual titles in her 2021 campaign, crossing the line first at the ACC Championships and the Southeast Regional Championships. She was NC State's top finisher at the NCAA Championships as well, placing sixth. At the conclusion of the season, Chmiel was named ACC Cross Country Performer of the Year and USTFCCCA Southeast Region Athlete of the Year.

All nine members of the team saw postseason action for the National Championship-winning Wolfpack. Five of the honorees garnered All-America status and six were each named to the All-Region and All-ACC teams.
The All-ACC Academic honors are the third for Chmiel, Clairmonte and Saw, the second for Holt, Howlett, Steelman and Tuohy and the first for Bush and Hayes.
2021 All-ACC Men's Cross Country Academic Team

NC State's three men's honorees all attained postseason honors, Gaynor and Kawalec tabbing All-ACC laurels while Kawalec and Snider garnered All-Region accolades.
Gaynor's honor is his fourth while Kawalec and Snider each earn the distinction for the first time.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0-grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0-grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
