RALEIGH – No. 8 NC State women's tennis (1-0) made its return to dual match play in fitting fashion with a top-25 victory over No. 23 Princeton (0-3) on Sunday afternoon.
NC State set the tone in the doubles point by going up a break on all three courts to put itself in position for two quick victories. The doubles point eventually decided the match as the teams split the six singles courts.
Priska Nugroho and Sara Nayar were first to get the win on court three, breaking to go up 4-3 and staying steady for the 6-4 decision. Jaeda Daniel and Nell Miller almost immediately closed out their 6-3 victory on court two to clinch. Amelia Rajecki and Abigail Rencheli, who were matched up against the nation's seventh-ranked duo on the top court, had their match halted with the score knotted at 4-4.
Princeton earned the first singles victory on court two, but Nugroho put the Pack back in front with a 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 60 Brianna Shvets on court three. The win was the first of Nugroho's dual match career at NC State and was her first win over a ranked opponent this season.
The Tigers then added another win to their tally in what was a top-10 singles matchup on court one.
After a perfect 3-0 tournament at the Miami Spring Invite last weekend, Wolfpack senior Nell Miller added to her winning streak with a three-setter on Saturday. The Kent, England, native took a 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 decision over Neha Velaga on court four to put the Pack a match away from the clinch. Miller broke to go up 3-1 in the third set and cruised from there in the victory.
All attention turned to the last two courts where NC State took the first set on five and Princeton took the first set on six. Rajecki managed to force a third set, but it was Sophie Abrams who finished off her 7-6 (3), 6-3 match with an ace to clinch the win.
