RALEIGH – The NC State women's soccer team (4-4-2, 0-2-0 ACC) suffered a 2-1 loss in its ACC home opener to 16th-ranked Clemson (7-2-0, 2-0-0 ACC) on Thursday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.
Despite scoring in the first 15 minutes of a match for the fifth time this season, the Tigers managed to knot the score late in the first half off of a penalty kick, and then found the back of the net in the final minutes of the contest to come away with the victory.
NC State got off to a fast start thanks to Annika Wohner's third goal of the season in the ninth minute. The Pack was awarded a free kick from near the halfway line, and Lulu Guttenberger and Emika Kawagishi worked a beautiful one-two that resulted in a Guttenberger shot that was blocked. The ball eventually found Wohner at the back post, who slid it into the bottom right corner of the goal.
In the 39th minute, Clemson knotted the score at one on a converted penalty kick by Megan Bornkamp.
The two teams battled to tally the game-winning goal in the second half, but with four minutes remaining in regulation Clemson's Renee Lyles scored from close range off of a Caroline Conti assist to ultimately send her team to victory.
Maria Echezarreta tallied a career high six saves in the match, including four in the second half, while Wohner now ranks second on the team in goals scored and Guttenberger paces the squad with four assists.
NC State returns to action Sunday when it welcomes No. 5 Virginia for a 1 p.m. contest at Dail Soccer Stadium in its second of a three-game home stretch. The match will be broadcast on ACCNX.
