Top-Ranked Wolfpack Women Claim Adidas XC Challenge Title

CARY, N.C. - The NC State cross country teams opened their 2021 seasons on Friday, competing at the adidas XC Challenge.
The Wolfpack women dominated the race from start to finish, sweeping the field with 15 team points. Nine of the top-10 runners at the 2K mark and at the finish were members of the NC State team, eight of whom sported the Pack uniforms. NC State claimed the top six spots overall.
Sophomore Brett Gardner was the first member of the Pack across the finish line in the men's race, leading the squad to a second-place overall finish with 47 points. No. 29 North Carolina took first with 31 points.
WOMEN'S 5K RECAP
NC State began the race running as a pack and never looked back. Twelve members of the team finished the race in the top 14 with 10 of those runners competing in an NC State uniform.
Sophomore Katelyn Tuohy took home her first career individual title, running the course in 16:29.6. She was closely followed by junior Kelsey Chmiel (16:31.0). The duo of New York natives finished the race over 10 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.
Sam Bush claimed third place in 16:41.3, crossing the finish line just ahead of Sarah LaTour (fourth, 16:43.6). Hannah Steelman rounded out the Wolfpack scoring crew in fifth place with a time of 16:52.6.
In sixth place was Heather Holt, who completed the 5K in 17:05.0. NC State's remaining finishes were all in the top 15 and included graduate transfer Allie Hays (ninth, 17:13.7), Mariah Howlett (10th, 17:25.6), Anna Vess (11th, 17:37.0) and Gionna Quarzo (14th, 17:43.6).
Freshman Brooke Rauber ran unattached, placing eighth with a time of 17:12.2. Isabel Zimmermann (12th, 17:38.6), Jenna Schulz (21st, 17:54.2), Claire Walters (26th, 18:19.1) and Sierra Collins (29th, 18:22.9) each competed unattached as well.
MEN'S 5K RECAP
Gardner claimed third place, running a 17:54.0 for the highest finish of his career. He finished the race just ahead of senior JP Flavin, who posted a time of 17:54.6 and took fourth.
Nate Kawalec was the Wolfpack's third scorer, placing 10th in 18:13.5. JJ Malach (15th, 18:22.6) and Dan McGoey (18th, 18:26.7) rounded out the scoring group.
Robinson Snider and Ian Harrison each placed in the top 25. Snider made his NC State debut at the meet, recording a 19th-place finish and a time of 18:28.0 while Ian Harrison placed 22nd with a time of 18:38.7.
Gavin Gaynor (40th, 19:09.7), Jake Toomey (45th, 19:18.3) and Kyle Durham (61st, 20:03.2) each suited up for the Wolfpack at the meet as well.
Matt Willis ran unattached, finishing 12th with a time of 18:19.3. Miles Ally, Matt Bogdan and Zach Hughes finished within seven spots of each other, each competing unattached as well. Ally recorded an 18:56.6 for 33rd place, Bogdan posted an 18:59.7 for 35th and Hughes tabbed a 19:08.2 to place 39th.

NC State will compete at a pair of meets, traveling to South Bend, Ind., for the Joe Piane Invitational Friday, Oct. 1 and to Cary, N.C., for the Great American XC Festival Saturday, Oct. 2.
