RALEIGH – NC State women's tennis opens a competitive slate of fall tournaments this weekend as it makes the trip to Charlottesville, Va., to participate in the Wahoowa Invitational.
Auburn, Kansas, Old Dominion and Penn State will also be competing at the event in addition to the Wolfpack and host Virginia. The tournament will be made up of individual head-to-head matches of both singles and doubles. There will be no live results. The schedule of play is as follows:
Friday (10 AM): NC State, Penn State, Old Dominion
Saturday (10 AM): NC State, Penn State, Auburn, Kansas
Sunday (2 PM): Virginia NC State, Penn State
"It's always exciting to get to the first event every fall," said head coach Simon Earnshaw. "It feels like it's come around quickly this year coming off last spring's success. Expectations are high, and these women have been putting in the work the past four to five weeks, so we'll get a good indication early about where we stand. We're sending a strong group of four up to Charlottesville. For each of them, this will be their fall debut for the program, with Abigail and Millie not having this change last fall and Sophie and Sara joining us over the summer. I expect it to be very competitive given the field, and I'm really thankful for us to be back in action and to have a full season. Go Pack!"
The Wolfpack is set to play official collegiate matches for the first time following its historic 2021 dual match campaign. The team is coming off of its best season in the program's 44-year history during which it reached its first-ever NCAA Championships semifinal and secured its best season-ending national ranking of No. 6.
NC State returns 2021 All-American performers Jaeda Daniel and Alana Smith, who both earned the citation in doubles last season. Sophomores Amelia Rajecki and Abigail Rencheli are also back with the squad, and the Pack also welcomes the addition of transfers Sophie Abrams and Sara Nayar and freshman Julia Abrams.
Headed into 2021-22, a total of six Wolfpack women's tennis players are featured in the preseason ITA Rankings.
Smith (No. 23), Rencheli (No. 48), S. Abrams (No. 49), Nayar (No. 73) and Daniel (No. 111) are all ranked in singles. Rencheli and S. Abrams both accomplished career-best standings.
In doubles, Rencheli and Rajecki check in at No. 18, and Daniel and Smith are ranked No. 27. The sophomore duo surged into the national top 20 for a big-time career-best mark after going 13-3 as a duo in 2021.
Following the Wahoowa Invitational, NC State is set to host the Wolfpack Invitational/Ranked Spotlight from Sept. 23-26.
