RALEIGH – NC State women's soccer (1-1-2) dropped a 2-1 result to 10th-ranked South Carolina (3-0-0) on Sunday afternoon in its home opener at Dail Soccer Stadium.
Despite scoring first for the fourth consecutive match, the Gamecocks managed to tie things up in the first half then found a way to score in the final minute of the contest.
"We did not have enough quality from our main players or our bench," said head coach Tim Santoro. "On a hot day like this, you need to be able to play a lot of players without the level changing and we did not have that today. They (South Carolina) did a better job at keeping higher levels of energy when they made changes and that resulted in an unfortunate late goal."
For the third time in four matches, Jameese Joseph (2') scored within the first 10 minutes of the contest when she managed to beat out South Carolina's defense from the midfield and finished from just inside the 18-yard box to the bottom right corner of the net.
In the 25th minute, South Carolina's Eveleen Hahn scored the equalizer on the double assist by Ryan Gareis and Lauren Change. Hahn was played a cross by Gareis, and tapped it in from 12 yards out to the bottom left.
With 45 seconds left in regulation, Corinna Zullo fired a shot to the lower right corner to give the Gamecocks a late 2-1 lead. The ball was crossed in by Gareis and missed at the front post, but eventually found Zullo at the back post.
The Pack returns to action Thursday when it travels to in-state foe UNCG. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, N.C., and the contest will be broadcast on ESPN+.
