RALEIGH – Despite a stellar outing from the Wolfpack's offense, the NC State softball team dropped its regular-season finale to Duke, 12-7. NC State will turn its attention to the ACC Tournament next week, May 12-15.
Six of the Wolfpack's seven runs came via the long ball, on home runs by Angie Rizzi, Logan Morris and Randi Farricker. Farricker added to her ACC leading number, with 17 on the season, while Morris recorded her 10th making her the third NC State player with double-digit home runs this season. The Pack is the only team in the conference with three players to have 10 more long balls.
Three pitchers saw action for NC State, with Sydney Nester pitching the most innings. Despite earning the loss, Nester pitched effectively for 4.1 innings where she allowed five runs (one earned) on three hits with four strikeouts.
After giving up a 5-0 lead to the Blue Devils, NC State quickly started chipping away in the bottom of the second inning. April Visser drew a lead off walk before Rizzi hit the two-out home run. Morris' home run came in the third following a bunt single by Sam Russ to cut the deficit to one, 4-5.
Duke tacked on another run in the top of the fifth, before NC State took its first lead of the weekend against the Blue Devils in the bottom part of the inning. Tatyana Forbes reached base to lead off the inning, before Farricker's home run. The hits kept coming for NC State with a double down the left field line by Morris and a sac bunt by Visser to score the seventh run of the day for NC State.
The Blue Devils then came back with six unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take the game.
