LOUISVILLE, KY. – The seventh-seed NC State softball team secured a huge win over Tobacco Road rival, North Carolina, Wednesday afternoon in the opening round of the 2021 ACC Championships. The Wolfpack did so in a 4-2 win behind the arm of freshman Estelle Czech who pitched a complete game in the circle.
The win marks the fourth-straight tournament participated in with at least one postseason win for NC State (26-24).
The lefty-freshman had an impressive postseason debut, as she did not allow an earned run in her 7.0 innings pitched. Czech (4-5) allowed just three hits, with five strikeouts and one walk. She is the first NC State pitcher to not allow an earned run in an ACC Championship game since Emily Weiman in 2013.
Brigette Nordberg, Sam Russ and Tatyana Forbes all went 2-for-3 at the plate, highlighted by Forbes' two RBIs. Russ also contributed a pair of stolen bases, tying her own school single-season stolen base record at 32.
North Carolina struck first in the game, scoring on a sac fly, however the Wolfpack turned a double play at third base to record two outs. The Tar Heels scored their run without a hit in the first inning, on a hit by pitch and NC State fielding error. North Carolina's second run came across in the third inning when they turned a one-out single into a run on a second error by the Wolfpack.
NC State answered promptly in the bottom of the third inning, as Russ laid down a bunt single to lead off the inning. Forbes delivered a single down the left field line, scoring Russ from second after a stolen base. With the deficit at one, Czech retired the side in the top of the fourth.
Sam Sack drew a hit by pitch to lead off the bottom of the fourth for NC State before Nordberg singled to left field. After a Carolina pitching change, NC State drew three-straight walks which brought in a pair of runs for a 3-2 lead. Forbes then recorded another RBI-single to bring in Angie Rizzi from third.
After a solid two innings in the circle for Czech, North Carolina threatened late in the seventh where they loaded the bases on a walk, single and hit by pitch. Forbes picked up the final out on a high fly ball to right field to secure the victory.
