COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – NC State women's basketball guard Diamond Johnson earned selection to the 2021 USA Basketball Women's U19 World Cup Team, as announced by the organization late Sunday night.
She was selected after spending the last three days competing with and against 27 other current or incoming collegiate players at the team trials in Denver. Johnson is one of nine players who solidified her spot on Team USA's roster for the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup, held August 7-15 in Debrecen, Hungary. Five additional finalists will return to training camp, which begins July 19 at a site to be announced, in hopes of securing one of the three remaining roster spots.
Following her time with USA Basketball this summer, Johnson will join the NC State program as a rising sophomore after transferring in from Rutgers. As a freshman in 2020-21, she earned a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and the Second Team All-Big Ten, averaging 17.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.3 steals per game last season.
A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Johnson scored in double figures in 17 games last season, with seven of those outings marking 20+ point performances. She ranked seventh in the nation in three-point field-goal percentage (.455). Johnson was the No. 6 player in her class coming out of high school, where she was a two-time Gatorade Pennsylvania Girls Basketball Player of the Year and a Philadelphians All-American.
