CLEMSON, S.C. – The NC State softball team dropped two hard fought games against #16 Clemson Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader to conclude the series. Clemson won both games by a score of 4-3.
Angie Rizzi and Brigette Nordberg both had 2-for-3 games, Rizzi doing so in game one of the doubleheader followed by Nordberg in game two. Nordberg had two RBIs in the series finale, including one in the top of the seventh to make it a one run game.
Abby Trahan pitched a stellar game one, despite getting into the jam in the seventh. She went 6.2 innings where she allowed four runs on four hits with nine strikeouts. Trahan had five scoreless innings before Clemson's first run in the sixth.
Estelle Czech took the complete game in the second game of the day, pitching 6.0 innings. Czech allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts.
GAME 1 RECAP
In what became quite the pitchers duel, NC State and Clemson battled to remain scoreless through the fifth. There were only two hits before the fourth inning, where NC State had a chance to break the tie on a pair of singles by Morris and Forbes, however, were unable to bring around a runner.
The offense clicked for NC State in the top of the sixth, as Rizzi led off the inning with a single and stolen base. With one out, Morris drew a walk before Gracie Roberts entered to pinch run. A ground out moved both runners to second and third, before a fielders' choice scored the first run of the day. A two-RBI single by Visser brought around both runners for a 3-0 Wolfpack lead.
Clemson started its scoring effort with a solo home run in the sixth before scoring three with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.
GAME 2 RECAP
Russ took first base after being hit by a pitch in the first inning. She promptly stole her 27th base of the season and took third on an defensive error by Clemson. A single to left field by Forbes gave the Wolfpack the early lead for the second-consecutive game, 1-0.
Clemson answered back in the bottom of the third, scoring a run on an NC State fielding error. After a scoreless fourth inning, NC State took back the lead as Visser drew a lead off walk before stealing second. Nordberg then ripped an RBI-single up the middle for a 2-1 Wolfpack lead.
The lead didn't hold for long as Clemson came back with a one-out RBI double in the bottom of the inning to tie it, 2-2. The Tigers then took their first lead of the game on a single down the right field line that scored runners from second and third for a 4-2 lead.
NC State tried to mount a late comeback in the seventh, as Visser drew another lead off walk and Sam Sack singled to center field to give NC State two runners. Nordberg's RBI drove in one run, however, the Wolfpack's pinch runner was thrown out at third and NC State was unable to get another run across.
