The Wolfpack opened the doubleheader with an 11-3 win and then held off a late rally to capture a 7-6 victory in game two, handing the Hokies their first series sweep loss of the season
GAME ONE
The Pack scored nine of its 11 runs in the first four innings and maintained its commanding lead the remainder of the game.
In the first, NC State jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a bases-loaded groundout by Jose Torres and a two-run single to shallow left field by Terrell Tatum with runners in scoring position.
The Hokies responded with a run in the second inning with Nick Biddison's sacrifice fly to right field.
The Pack plated three more runs on two outs in its half of the second thanks to Jonny Butler's bases-loaded 2-RBI single through the right side followed by Torres's RBI single to left center with runners at the corners.
In the third Devonte Brown drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then back-to-back hits by Austin Murr and Tyler McDonough to left field scored a pair of runs to give NC State an 8-1 lead.
Butler led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to center field, his fifth of the season, and then plated another run in the sixth on Brown's two-out infield single to give the Pack a 10-1 lead.
Tech managed to score a pair of runs on six hits to cut its deficit to 10-3 in the seventh, but Butler crushed his second leadoff homer of the game over the center field wall in the eighth to swing the momentum back in the Pack's favor for the final outs of the contest.
GAME TWO
The squads traded runs in four of the five first innings of the second game. Virginia Tech struck first thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles by Cade Swisher and Biddison in the second inning.
The Pack answered in the bottom frame when Torres led off with a triple to right field and then scored on Brown's ground-rule double to right field.
In the third, Tanner Schobel gave the Hokies its two-run lead back with a solo shot to left field, but McDonough answered with a solo shot of his own for his seventh of the year.
An RBI double by Tech's Biddison and RBI single by J.T. Jarrett in the fourth, followed by TJ Rumfield's double and McDonough's second homer of the game in the fifth inning made the score a narrow 5-4 decision.
Torres came up clutch in the seventh when he laced a one-out double with runners at first and second to give the Pack its first lead of the contest. Brown then drove in Torres from third with a sacrifice fly to center field to make the score 7-5.
Schobel homered for the second time in the contest to make it a one-run game in the ninth, but Tech's rally fell short and was unable to salvage the series.
