SOUTH BEND, IND. – Despite a team-high 21 kills by Melissa Evans, the NC State volleyball team was edged by Miami, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in South Bend, Ind. Evans had a balanced performance that included a .340 hitting percentage, 12 digs, three blocks and four assists.
The Wolfpack offense was also highlighted by 12 digs by Jade Parchment and seven from Lydia Adam. Defensively, Kaylee Frazier held down the back row with a team-best 14 digs.
MATCH RECAP
It was an offense-powered first set, as both teams hit above .300. Miami had an early 5-1 run, going up 10-5 for a lead they would not relinquish. NC State pieced together four unanswered points, late in the set to pull within three, 22-19. The two teams would trade back-and-forth the final five points of the set, not allowing NC State to gain any ground.
The second set was a much different story for the Wolfpack as they halted Miami's offense, and held them to a .118 hitting percentage. With an early 10-5 lead that eventually grew to 16-8, NC State controlled the second set. The Hurricanes put together a 6-2 run, inching back within four before kills by Melissa Evans and Jade Parchment temporarily ended the run. Miami would have another huge comeback attempt in the second set, tying the set, 21-21, off a 7-1 run. However, a Jade Parchment ace and kill by Evans evened the match at one set apiece.
Miami continued its streak-scoring, with several scoring runs in the third set, holding as good as a 23-14 lead. NC State had a 5-1 run, that included starving off two set points down the stretch before Miami finally came away with the third set win.
NC State's offense was slow to get going in the fourth set, giving up a 21-12 lead. At that point Jade Parchment had three kills and NC State had two blocks as a part of a 8-2 run that pulled the team within three points, but a pair of kills by Miami's Elizaveta Lukianova clinched the match win.
