Junior featured on the list for second season in a row
LOS ANGELES – For the second season in a row, NC State women's basketball center Elissa Cunane is one of 15 collegiate players selected for the 2021 Women's National Ballot for the John R. Wooden Award, as announced by the Los Angeles Athletic club on Saturday.
Cunane is one of six players on the 2021 list after also appearing on the ballot in 2020.
The National Ballot consists of student-athletes who are candidates for the Wooden Award All-American Team and the Wooden Award Trophy that recognizes college basketball's Player of the Year. Cunane is also in consideration for multiple other national honors, which includes being a semifinalist for Naismith Player of the Year and Naismith Defensive Player of the Year and a Top 5 finalist for the Lisa Leslie Award.
A Consensus First Team All-ACC honoree this season, Cunane continues to prove herself as one of the nation's top players. She is the centerpiece to the Pack's four-out, one-in system that has put together an 18-2 record and is set to play in the ACC Tournament semifinal for the fourth year in a row.
Cunane averages a team-leading 16.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 56.6 percent (103-of-182) shooting. All of those numbers rank in the top seven in the league, with her field-goal percentage ranking 18th in the nation. She puts up those averages with 25.6 minutes per game.
The Summerfield, N.C., native has scored in double figures in all but one game she played in this season, with four 20+ point outings and five double-doubles on the year. She has shot 50+ percent from the floor in a total of 11 outings, including two perfect shooting nights against NC Central (6-of-6) and Boston College (9-of-9).
The Wolfpack junior most recently opened 2021 ACC Tournament action with a 27-point performance to lead the Pack past the Virginia Tech Hokies. In the game, Cunane scored 18 points in the paint, shot 10-of-15 (.667) overall and 7-of-8 (.875) from the charity stripe.
Nearly 1,000 voters will cast their ballot from March 16 to March 23, taking into consideration a player's entire season of play as well as the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The finalists for the 2021 Wooden Award will be announced on March 26.
