Softball Drops Doubleheader Against Irish

SOUTH BEND, IND. – It was a four home run day for the NC State softball team, but the Wolfpack was not able to overcome Notre Dame in Saturday's double header. The Fighting Irish won the first game 8-0 in five innings and held on through an NC State comeback threat for a 7-6 win in game two.
The series finale against the Irish is slated for tomorrow, Sunday, March 28 at 12 p.m.
Sam Russ led the Pack offensively in the second game, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two singles and a two-run home run in the top of the sixth.
GAME 1 RECAP
Notre Dame jumped ahead to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double and never looked back. The lead extended to 3-0 before Trahan got out of the inning with a play at home by Sam Sack. NC State got through the third inning without allowing a base runner, however, Notre Dame scored two runs in the fourth and then had three runs on three hits to end the game in the fifth.
NC State had a two-out single on two different occasions but couldn't produce a run.
Abby Trahan went 4.1 innings where she allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts.
GAME 2 RECAP
NC State took the early 2-0 lead off a two-run blast from Sack in the opening frame of the game. It was the fifth home run of the season for Sack and the second of the weekend.
Notre Dame quickly came back, adding one run in the bottom of the first before scoring six unanswered runs for a 7-2 lead. With the Wolfpack's backs against the walls in the sixth inning, Logan Morris drew a lead off walk before Sam Russ hit her first home run in nearly three weeks. Russ' home run was her sixth of the season, and cut into Notre Dame's lead 7-4.
After Sydney Nester quickly retired the Irish with a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth, Brigette Nordberg entered the game as a pinch hitter and reached on a Notre Dame error. April Visser stepped to the plate and notched her second home run of the season to make it a one-run, 7-6, game. NC State couldn't find a way to bring across another run as they next three batters were retired.
Nester pitched the complete game, allowing seven runs (six earned) on five hits with two strikeouts.
