MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – NC State men's golf sophomore Max Steinlechner shot five-under to move into first place on the individual leaderboard and the Pack shot 10-under as a team on Monday to move into first place on the team leaderboard after two rounds of the V1 Sports General Hackler Championship held at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
The Pack was one of just two teams to shoot under-par on Monday. NC State entered the day in fourth place, four shots back of first place, but quickly moved into the lead and did not look back as the Pack shot a second round-best 10-under and now has a 10-shot lead on second place, North Florida.
For the second consecutive day, Steinlechner shot a five-under par 67 to move to 10-under for the tourney. He has a two-shot lead on the field. The Austria native opened the second round with a birdie and had his second eagle of the tourney on hole 4 before suffering his first bogey of the tournament on the sixth hole. The sophomore didn't have another bogey on the day as he birded three holes on the back nine.
Easton Paxton matched his teammate in round two with a five-under par 67. The Riverton, Wyo., native got off to a red-hit start, birdieing holes one and three and scoring an eagle on the fourth hole. Another birdie on the eighth hole moved Paxton to five-under through eight holes. Three bogeys on the next six holes thwarted Paxton's momentum, but the senior rebounded with three birdies on the final four holes to move into a tie for third place.
Benjamin Shipp is next for the Pack in a tie for 14th place. The senior shot a 74 on Monday and is still one-under par for the tournament.
Christian Salzer moved up 17 places on the individual leaderboard after shooting an even-par 72 in the second round. The senior's only blemish of the day occurred on hole 4 where a double bogey dropped him to two-over par on the day, but he didn't have another bogey on the day as he birded two holes on the back nine to stay at even-par for the tournament.
The tournament has 90 players competing and only 23 are at par or better through two rounds, including the Pack's top four scorers.
Carter Graf moved up 27 spots into a tie for 30th place with an even-par 72 on Monday. The sophomore showed mental toughness on the course as he immediately carded birdies after his two bogeys in the second round to finish at even-par for the round.
Ethan Choi, playing unattached and making his collegiate debut in this tournament, shot a 79 on Monday and is in a tie for 83rd place.
