
Softball Hosts Big South Favorites Gardner-Webb

RALEIGH – Following a solid outing to open its 2021 season, NC State enters this weekend for its first non-conference matchup with a 4-2 record. The Wolfpack are set to host Gardner-Webb for a four-game weekend series, Feb. 26-28. The weekend kicks off Friday, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m. before a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The final game between the two teams is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 28 at 12 p.m. All four games are scheduled to be on ACCNX.
Due to health and safety recommendations and current state guidelines, attendance at NC State softball home competitions is limited to a pass list of player and coach guests only. ACC OPENER. SEASON OPENER.
NC State played its first game in 344 days last weekend as the team opened its season with six ACC games against Boston College and Louisville. The Pack's offensive highlights came from Sam Gress and Sam Russ, who completed the comeback victory for NC State in the bottom of the seventh inning against Boston College with back-to-back home runs. The home run was the first of Gress' career and came with two outs and two strikes.
Gress batted .500 through the weekend, playing at second and third base. She ranks third in the ACC in batting average and second with a .625 on-base percentage, both of which also lead the NC State team.
#HOMERUNMINDSET
NC State put its #HomerunMindset to work in the first weekend of the 2021 season, hitting 12 home runs in six games. As a team, the Wolfpack is averaging 2.00 home runs per game, a mar which ranks eighth nationally and leads the ACC. The team has eight total players with a home run this season, and three who rank in the top-10 in the ACC. Russ currently leads the conference and ranks 28th nationally, averaging 0.50 a game.
SCOUTING GARDNER-WEBB
Gardner-Webb has yet to play this season as its first two weekends were canceled due to weather. The Runnin' Bulldogs were picked as the Big South Preseason favorites, returning a stacked roster from a year ago. In 2020, Gardner-Webb had compiled a 24-5 record and currently boast the Big South Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Brooke Perry, and Big South Preseason Co-Player of the Year, Autumn Owen.
Perry had an 11-3 record last season with a 1.75 ERA, three shutouts and 104 strikeouts. A two-way player, she also batted .319 with five home runs and 28 RBI. Owen has a .384 career batting average and 17 home runs.
