GREENSBORO, N.C. – NC State's men's swimmers began their turn at the 2021 ACC Championships on Wednesday evening, picking up the 800-yard freestyle relay win to open action at the conference meet.
Luke Miller (1:32.55), Eric Knowles (1:32.27), Erge Gezmis (1:33.70) and Hunter Tapp (1:34.16) brought home the top finish in a combined time of 6:12.68.
Miller's leadoff split was his best 200-yard freestyle mark of the year, moving him into a tie for fourth in program history. He closed an early gap behind Virginia Tech in the last 50 yards of his leg, and Knowles managed to take a narrow lead in the second leg.
Gezmis maintained the Pack's lead in the third leg of the race, and Tapp powered his way down the stretch to secure the top touch by nearly a body length. Their winning time was an NCAA A cut and marked NC State's first time winning the 800-yard freestyle relay since 2018.
NC State also put together an NCAA A cut time in the 200-yard medley relay, the first event of the conference meet. Kacper Stokowski (21.18), Rafal Kusto (23.49), Luke Sobolewski (20.38) and Giovanni Izzo (19.09) went 1:24.14 for a relay that placed sixth overall.
NC State will continue action at the ACC Championships on Thursday, with prelims scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. Tomorrow's events include the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard individual medley, the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle relay. The entire day of action can be streamed live on ACCNX.
