Game against Nebraska was just the fifth four overtime game in ACC history
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men's basketball team outlasted Nebraska Wednesday evening, downing the Cornhuskers, 104-100, in a four overtime marathon inside PNC Arena.
The game tied for the longest-game in overtime history and is the third four overtime game in program history. (March 14, 1989 – NC State 110, Wake Forest 103; March 6, 1956 – Canisius 79, NC State 78)
It's just the fifth four overtime game in the ACC's 68-year existence.
The Pack was led by redshirt sophomore Dereon Seabron who scored career-highs in points (39) and rebounds (18) to will NC State to victory. The Norfolk, Va., native was 11-of-22 from the field and 17-of-20 from the free throw line. He also tied for the team-high with two steals.
Seabron scored 33 of his 39 points in the second half and overtimes.
The 39 points are the most-ever by a player in the 23-year history of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. It's the most points scored by an NC State player since TJ Warren had 42 against Boston College on March 9, 2014.
Seabron's 17 free throws are tied for the third-most in program history.
He also played 57 out of a possible 60 minutes which is the second-most minutes in a single-game in program history.
Ebenezer Dowuona also had a career-nigh as the sophomore forward had a career-best eight blocks in the win for the Pack. The eight blocks are tied for the third-most in program history.
NC State jumped out to a nine-point lead in the first half, but a long drought in the final minutes of the opening half allowed Nebraska go into the halftime break with a 39-38 lead.
A four overtime game did not appear to be in the future in the first 10 minutes of the second half as Nebraska extended its lead, jumping out to a 14-point lead on a Kobe Webster jumper with 9:51 to play.
The Pack responded with a 14-0 run over the next 3-plus minutes tying the game on a Jericole Hellems corner three-pointer with 6:08 to go.
The rest of regulation would see neither team grab a lead larger than one possession. A Seabron free throw with five seconds left tied the game at 70 and Nebraska's game-winner was off to send the game into overtime.
The first overtime was scoreless for over four minutes until Nebraska finally scored the first points with 57 seconds left. Seabron would tie the game at 72, Nebraska answered to push the lead back to two, but Seabron was fouled at the other end with six seconds left and made both free throws to send the game to a second overtime.
Nebraska led by five, 85-80, in the second overtime with 1:44 to go, but the Pack responded with a 6-0 run taking an 86-85 lead on a Seabron lay-up with four seconds to go. Nebraska's Bryce McGowens was fouled with seconds to go and he made the first free throw to tie the game, but missed the second sending the game into a third overtime.
Nebraska again took a lead in the third overtime, leading by four with 2:14 to go in overtime, but two Thomas Allen free throws cut the Huskers lead in half and Dowuona had a game-tying putback with five seconds left to send the game into a fourth and final overtime.
NC State never trailed in the final overtime as Terquavion Smith opened the period with a three-pointer. Seabron put the Pack up 100-95 with a driving lay-up with 44 seconds to play and NC State made enough free throws down the stretch to prevent Nebraska from getting even.
The 204 combined points between the two teams is a PNC Arena record.
NC State is back in action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Louisville (5-2) inside PNC Arena. The game will start at 2 p.m. and be televised on ESPN2.
