RALEIGH – NC State put up a valiant effort but could not slow down No. 2 Louisville as the Pack dropped a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-21) decision in Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball action on Friday night inside of Reynolds Coliseum.
The Pack (13-11, 7-6 ACC) recorded one less kill than the Cardinals (22-0, 12-0) but Louisville tallied nine service aces and nine blocks to hold off any hopes for NC State.
Graduate student Melissa Evans led the way for the Pack as she tallied a double double with 10 kills and 10 digs, both of which were game highs. Both junior Taylor Rowland and senior Jade Parchment added nine kills apiece with Parchment hitting .304.
Junior Kristen McDaniel racked up 25 assists with seven digs while freshman Jada Allen recorded six kills as the middle on an errorless .500 hitting clip alongside two blocks.
Set One (NC State 19, Louisville 25)
NC State was able to hold a tight lead early in the set but Louisville keep fighting and reeled off a 6-0 run to take a 10-5 lead that it would not relinquish. The Pack tried to battle back, coming within three points at 16-13 but an attacking error halted all momentum for NC State.
Set Two (NC State 20, Louisville 25)
The teams battled closely for the first few points as all three ties and two lead changes happened by the third point of the set. Tied at 3-3, Louisville went on a fierce 6-1 run that created enough momentum for the Cards to hold off NC State and take a 2-0 lead. The Pack recorded 16 kills in the set but Louisville tallied 13 kills with only two errors and three blocks to limit any runs for NC State.
Set Three (NC State 21, Louisville 25)
The final set started similarly to the first as there were seven ties and four lead changes by the ninth point. Tied at 9-all, the Cards went on a 6-1 run to gain a 15-10 lead which forced NC State to call a timeout. The Wolfpack kept its composure, battling back to come within one point (18-19) but a couple of attacking errors gave Louisville enough of a gap to hold off for the win.
