RALEIGH – The 12th-seeded NC State men's soccer team (7-7-2) begins postseason action on Wednesday evening when it makes the trip to South Bend, Ind., to take on fifth-seeded Notre Dame (9-5-2). Kickoff between the Wolfpack and the Fighting Irish is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Alumni Stadium, and live video coverage will be provided by ACCNX.
The winner of Wednesday's match will play at fourth-seeded Louisville on Sunday evening at 6 p.m.
A WIN WEDNESDAY WOULD
• Be the 539th win in program history (538-470-104)
• Be the 200th win in head coach George Kiefer's career (199-121-67)
• Be Kiefer's 38th victory at NC State (37-35-16)
• Be NC State's 15th all-time win in the ACC Tournament (14-28-6)
PACK IN THE ACC TOURNEY
• The Wolfpack is making its 31st appearance in the ACC Tournament. With a limited field due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NC State did not participate in the tournament in 2020.
• NC State won the ACC Tournament title in 1990 as the No. 4 seed that season. In total, the Pack has reached three ACC Tournament finals - 1987, 1990 and 2009.
• NC State has advanced past the first round to reach the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament in both of its last two appearances (2018 and 2019).
• The Wolfpack is 6-6-0 in first round games.
SERIES HISTORY (NC State trails 2-3-1)
• Friday marks the seventh overall meeting between NC State and Notre Dame. It will be the teams' first time facing off in ACC Tournament action.
• NC State and Notre Dame matched up for regular-season action on Sept. 17, and the Fighting Irish came away from that game with the 1-0 win after breaking the deadlock on an even match in the 84th minute.
• Friday's match will be the Wolfpack's third trip to South Bend. Notre Dame has won both of its previous home matches against NC State.
• The Pack's last win in the series was on Oct. 4, 2019. That match, which was played in Raleigh, ended in a 2-0 score in NC State's favor with Kuda Muskwe (35') and Pepe Garcia (54') scoring the team's goals.
LAST TIME OUT
• NC State earned its first ACC win of the year in its season finale on Friday night with a 1-0 overtime victory over visiting Boston College.
• Luke Hille scored a golden goal in the 108th minute off an assist from fellow rookie Noe Cabezas. Cabezas worked his way into the box, taking the ball to the back right corner before chipping a centering pass in to Hille who finished on the header.
• NC State owned the 26-5 advantage in shots, with eight of those coming on target.
• Leon Krapf was perfect in goal for NC State, making two saves in his fifth shutout of the season.
• NC State played a man up from the 81st minute on after Boston College was assessed a red card. Following that penalty, NC State out-shot Boston College 13-0 before converting on that last attempt by Hille.
TRACKING THE PACK (7-7-2)
• The Pack's 217 shot attempts have been distributed among 17 different players, led by 35 strikes from Muskwe. Muskwe's 2.2 shots per game ranks ninth in the ACC.
• Eleven different players have found the back of the net in 2021, with Hille's six goals pacing the team.
• Jamie Smith has scored all three of his goals this year on free kicks. His two-goal game against JMU on Sept. 14 marked the first time in the Kiefer era that more than one goal has been tallied by a single defender in a game.
• Krapf is ranked fifth in the league in total saves (42, 2.63 per game) and seventh in save
percentage (.689). His 25 career shutouts are good for sole possession of second place in the NC State record book.
• NC State has held five of its opponents scoreless this season and held another five to just a single score.
HIGHLIGHTING HILLE
Hille is tied for 10th in the league with his six goals this season. He is one of four true freshmen (UNC's Tega Ikoba, Virginia Tech's Conor Pugh, Notre Dame's Matthew Roou) to tally that number of scores. Each of those other players did so in 15+ games while Hille reached that accomplishment in just seven games played this season.
