PITTSBURGH – NC State women's soccer (8-8-2, 4-6-0 ACC) closed out its regular season slate on Thursday night with a 2-0 loss to Pittsburgh (11-7-0, 4-6-0 ACC) at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
The Panthers scored a pair of late first half goals and managed to hold their lead the rest of the contest. This was the Wolfpack's first loss that was not decided by a goal.
Amanda West put the Panthers on the board in the 33rd minute with a strike just inside the box that was out of reach of goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta, as the ball slid just under the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Pitt doubled its lead in the 43rd minute with Emily Yaple's header goal following a corner kick. Hailey Davidson played to Yaple inside the box, and after her first header attempt fell short, she collided with Echezarreta and her second attempt rolled into the back of the net.
Echezarreta matched her career high in saves with eight, marking the fourth consecutive match she has tallied six or more saves.
NC State will now await its fate for the NCAA Tournament. Starting this year, the ACC Championship has been reduced to six teams, but because of the league's dominance typically eight to 10 teams make the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will be November 8 at 4:30 p.m., and the NCAA First Round will be held November 12-14 at various campus sites.
