Tournament win was second win of the fall for NC State
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men's golf team made up a 10-shot deficit in the third round on Sunday to win the Wolfpack Intercollegiate held at Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
The Pack entered the third round, trailing second-round leader UNCG by 10 shots, but quickly made up the difference on the front nine and then pulled away from the Spartans on the back nine to win by five shots.
NC State has now won the Wolfpack Intercollegiate all four times it has been held with Press McPhaul as head coach.
The tournament win is the second in four tournaments for the Pack this fall and dating back to the spring season, NC State has now won six team tournaments in the 2021 calendar year.
UNCG took home second place while Virginia Tech finished in third place, 13 shots back of NC State.
Easton Paxton led the Pack with a third-place finish as the senior followed up rounds of one-under par 71s with a five-under 67 in the third round on Sunday. Paxton finished with a score of seven-under par for the tournament.
Brandon Einstein and Spencer Oxendine were next for the Pack in a tie for ninth place. Einstein improved every round, carding a 72-71-70 to finish three-under while Oxendine finished with a 54-hole card of 72-67-74.
Ethan Choi finished in a tie for 13th place at two-under par. Choi shot a 70 in the first round and a 71 in the second before finishing with a 73 in the third round.
Tim Bunten rounded out NC State's lineup with an even-par finish as the grad transfer shot even-par in all three rounds.
Playing as an individual, Jake Herring posted the second top-20 performance of his collegiate career as he finished at one-under par. Herring shot a 69 in the first round, a 74 in the second before closing with an even-par 72 on Sunday.
Thomas Deal and Jake Wiktor finished in a tie for 86th place while Carter Graf finished in 89th.
NC State completes its fall schedule when it competes in the Williams Cup presented by Stitch Golf on Oct. 25 and 26 in Wilmington, N.C.
