
NC State Women Win Joe Piane Invitational Crown

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The men's and women's NC State cross country squads posted successful outings at the Joe Piane Invitational on Friday, each earning a top-10 finish in fields stacked with ranked teams.
The T-No. 1 Wolfpack women claimed first place over four teams ranked in the top 10, scoring 38 points as the only team with more than two finishers in the top 10.
NC State's men's squad made a strong showing in a field that included 11 ranked teams, tabbing 286 points to place 10th overall.
WOMEN'S BLUE 5K RECAP
NC State led throughout the race and increased its presence up front as the competition continued. At the one-mile mark, Katelyn Tuohy and Hannah Steelman were each in the top 5, and by the 4000m mark five members of the squad were in the top 10.
At the race's conclusion, it was junior Kelsey Chmiel who crossed the finish line first for NC State. The Saratoga Springs, N.Y., native placed third, running a 16:14.6 that was just 4.3 seconds behind first-place finisher and reigning NCAA individual champion Mercy Chelangat.
Steelman clocked a 16:23.0 for sixth place and was joined in the top 10 by Katelyn Tuohy (eighth place, 16:23.7) and Sarah LaTour (ninth place, 16:26.9)
Allie Hays rounded out the NC State scoring, finishing 12th in 16:32.9.
Sam Bush (19th, 16:42.3), Heather Holt (45th, 16:58.3) and Dominique Clairmonte (88th, 17:22.0) each suited up for the Blue race as well.
MEN'S BLUE 5M RECAP
The Wolfpack moved into the top 10 as a team by the 4000m mark and remained there until the end of the race.
JP Flavin clocked the fastest time for NC State, completing the five-mile course in 23:43.4 for an 11th-place finish.
Graduate transfer Robinson Snider posted a 42nd-place finish (24:21.8) as the Pack's second runner across the line while Gavin Gaynor ran a 24:32.5 to take 50th.
Nate Kawalec and Brett Gardner were the final two scorers, Kawalec placing 72nd (24:46.5) and Gardner finishing 111th (25:10.0).
Dan McGoey, Ian Harrison and Jake Toomey all laced up to run for the Pack as well. McGoey finished in 130th (25:22.8), Harrison tabbed the 139th spot (25:32.4) and Toomey placed 159th (26:04.0).
WOMEN'S OPEN 5K RECAP
Five women competed in the open 5K, four of whom finished in the top 10.
Savannah Shaw led the way, finishing in the top spot with a time of 16:58.0 and was followed closely in the standings by Mariah Howlett's third-place finish (17:12.0).
Isabel Zimmermann tabbed fifth, running a 17:24.4. while Gionna Quarzo posted a 17:31.4 for ninth. Anna Vess rounded out the open 5K competitors, finishing 26th with a time of 18:07.8

NC State concludes its regular season Friday, Oct. 15 at the Nuttycombe Invitational (Madison, Wisc.) and the ECU Pirate Invitational (Greenville, N.C.).
