DURHAM, N.C. – Despite an impressive 19 kill performance by Melissa Evans, the NC State Wolfpack was unable to push past Duke for the second-time this season. The Blue Devils won 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 25-23, 25-21) as they move to 2-0 on the season.
In addition to her 19 kills, Evans contributed six digs, three blocks and two aces. Jade Parchment was firing on all cylinders, after being quieted against the Blue Devils on Wednesday. Parchment tallied 13 kills and 12 digs, surpassing 600 career kills in the process.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After dropping the first two sets, NC State also faced a deficit late in the third set, down 21-17. The Pack closed the gap to two, following several Blue Devil attacking errors. A 4-0 run behind the serve of Hannah Reid lifted NC State in front, 24-22. In the third set, Evans led the Pack with five kills while Parchment and Lydia Adam both had two.
Looking to carry its momentum into the fourth set, NC State came out to an early 5-2 lead that included a pair of kills by Parchment. The Blue Devils quickly tied it up as the teams entered a back and forth battle with five ties. NC State built its largest lead of the night, 17-12, on a 8-3 run. Duke could not be held back however as they pieced together a run of their own to take a 21-18 lead.
Several key plays late in the fourth set kept the Pack in contention, including a big block by Pam Chukwujekwu and Evans, however, the Blue Devils held off the surge by NC State for the fourth set and match victory.
