RALEIGH – Rising senior Eric Knowles and recent graduate Makayla Sargent were honored as members of the 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large Teams, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) organization Friday afternoon. It marked the fourth season in a row that the NC State swimming and diving programs have been represented on this list.
Knowles earned a spot on the First Team, marking the second season in a row that he has been named an Academic All-American. Sargent, who garnered the honors for the first time in her career, was named to the Second Team. Both student-athletes boast perfect 4.0 GPAs at NC State.
Knowles, a materials science engineering major, added to his list of career academic awards. The Wolfpack captain is also a three-time Academic All-ACC honoree and a two-time CSCAA Scholar All-American, in addition to his pair of CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades.
In the pool, Knowles put together another solid season. The Dayton, Ohio, native gained All-America status in four events - the 800-yard freestyle relay, 500-yard freestyle, 400-yard individual medley and 1,650-yard freestyle - after earning NCAA Championships qualification in each. At the 2020 ACC Championships, Knowles finished in the top six of all of those events, and his 14:47.94 fourth-place mile time from the conference meet ended the season ranked 13th nationally.
Sargent, a psychology major, was also recognized as a member of the Academic All-ACC Team in 2019 and 2020 and was named a CSCAA Scholar All-American in 2019.
A native of Victor, N.Y., Sargent qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 1,650-yard freestyle and the 400-yard individual medley, earning her All-America status in each. She placed in the top five of all three of her individual events at the conference meet, including a podium finish in the mile. Her season-best 1,650-yard freestyle time of 16:01.36 was good for 16th in the nation.
