School-record six NWCA D1 Scholar All-Americans named
RALEIGH, N.C. – For the first time in school history, the NC State Wrestling team was named a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Top-30 Scholar All-American Team. The Wolfpack ranked 16th nationally with a 3.25 team GPA this past season.
Â
"We continue to check our boxes of goals as a team, and this has been one eight years in the works," said head coach Pat Popolizio. "We've accomplished a lot on the mat, and we've done good academically through the years, but to make it into the top-20 nationally for the first time ever shows you how motivated this team was academically. This is one that I really enjoyed seeing play out over the years to get to this level.
Â
"This is a huge accomplishment for this team. It was one of our top goals at the beginning of this past season to reach. A lot of hard work and effort went into this recognition"
Â
In addition, a school record six members of the Pack were named 2020 NWCA D1 Scholar All-Americans.
Â
NC State had a pair named an Academic All-American for third time in their careers. 2020 ACC Wrestling Scholar Athlete of the Year Hayden Hidlay (157 pounds) and classmate R-Jr. Daniel Bullard (174) both received the honor for the third straight year.
Â
Both Bullard and Hidlay will earn their undergrad degrees this semester, and come back for the Pack's 2020-21 lineup.
Â
In his first season as a starter, R-So. A.J. Leitten (149) was named an academic All-American.
Â
A trio of redshirt freshmen were also named in their first seasons competing in the Red & White singlet. Both Jarrett Trombley (133) and Trent Hidlay (184) posted perfect 4.0 GPAs, and classmate and 2020 ACC Champion Jakob Camacho (125) also earned the academic honor.
