NC State ends game on 13-3 run to claim first title for program since 1991
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The NC State women's basketball team ended the game on a 13-3 run to defeat fourth-seed Florida State, 71-66, and win the 2020 ACC Tournament at Greensboro Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
The ACC Tournament title is the first for NC State since 1991 and the fifth in program history.
In a tightly contested game that had 12 lead changes and nine ties, Florida State appeared to be making a game-defining run at the right time, going on a 10-0 streak to take its largest lead of the game, 63-58, with 3:45 to play.
NC State answered with an Elissa Cunane lay-up to stop the run and then Cunane had a steal on the other end to give the ball back to the Pack. Kayla Jones found Aislinn Konig in transition for a three to tie the game with 2:28 remaining.
The Pack got another defensive stop and Cunane gave NC State the lead with a free throw. NC State again stopped FSU on its next possession and Jones made her first attempt, missed the second, but Jakia Brown-Turner grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled. She made both of her free throws to give the Pack a 67-63 lead with 1:03 to go.
Florida State stopped the Pack's 9-0 run with a free throw to again make it a one possession game.
Cunane split a pair of free throws on the Pack's next possession, and after two Florida State free throws, split another pair to give NC State a 69-66 lead with 21 second remaining.
The Pack closed out the game with two more Cunane free throws as NC State held the Seminoles without a field goal and forced two FSU turnovers over the final 3:45 of the game.
Cunane and Konig led the Pack with 18 points. Cunane scored nine of her 18 points in the fourth quarter. Konig finished the game with four three-pointers, including 2-of-2 in the fourth quarter.
Brown-Tuner added 14 points and a career-high 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.
Konig was named ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player. The senior guard averaged 17.7 points per game in three NC State wins in the tourney. Cunane also earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
NC State will return to action in the NCAA Tournament which will begin on Friday, March 20.
The 2020 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship bracket will be announced Monday, March 16 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
