RALEIGH – Brigette Nordberg hit a sixth inning, walk-off home run Sunday afternoon to conclude the NC State Invitational with a 12-2 NC State win over North Carolina A&T. Nordberg's three-run shot is her sixth home run of the season, which leads the Wolfpack and ranks third in the ACC.
Nordberg had a stellar day at the plate for NC State, going 3-for-4 with six RBIs and two runs scored. The offense didn't end there as nine different NC State players recorded a hit and every starter reached base. Randi Farricker and Carson Shaner joined Nordberg with multi-hit games, each tallying two.
Freshman Sam Gress started in the circle, throwing one inning where she allowed one hit and struck out two. Sydney Nester earned her eighth win of the season after coming in relief and pitching the remaining five innings. Nester (8-4) allowed just two runs on two hits with eight strikeouts and surpassing 75 strikeouts on the season.
GAME RECAP
NC State (14-6) played a little small ball in the first inning, picking up two runs for the 2-0 lead on back-to-back sacrifice flies from Logan Morris and Angie Rizzi. The scoring continued for the Pack in the bottom of the second thanks to Sam Sack's first double of the season followed by an RBI-single from Shaner.
A two-run home run from the Aggies in the top of the third slashed NC State's lead, 3-2, before getting back a run in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI-single from Nordberg. The Wolfpack's offense exploded with four runs off three hits in the bottom of the fifth, including a first career hit and RBI for freshman Kelsey O'Connor.
Singles by Morris and Farricker in the bottom of the sixth set up a walk-off opportunity, as NC State needed only one more run to secure the eight-run mercy rule win. On the first pitch she saw, Nordberg swung away to end the game with her 23rd career home run.
