
Pack Splits Pair of Games Against Kentucky, Missouri State

CLEARWATER, FLA. – The NC State softball team split a pair of games on the second day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic Saturday afternoon. The Pack was edged by #15/16 Kentucky, 6-2, in an eight-inning battle before defeating Missouri State, 7-5.
For the second consecutive day, Tatyana Forbes led NC State (2-2) going 4-for-7 with two RBIs and a run scored, including a triple. She is now 8-for-15 with a team-high eight RBIs through the first two days of the season. Forbes and Sam Russ both went 2-for-3 against Missouri State with Russ also tallying two runs scored.
Devin Wallace took the win in game two of the day, pitching a complete game. Wallace (1-1) allowed seven hits with five runs while striking out seven. Sydney Nester took the loss against Kentucky, pitching 7.1 innings with five hits and allowing six runs. Nester (1-1) gave up just four hits in the opening seven innings of the game.
KENTUCKY RECAP
Kentucky (3-0) took the early lead with a pair of hits in the bottom of the first inning, including a double from Alex Martens, for a 1-0 lead. The Wolfpack responded promptly with a run in the top of the second. Randi Farricker led off the inning with a single up the middle before advancing to second on a groundout. A single from Sam Sack moved her to third before she scored on a Wildcat throwing error.
Kentucky took back the lead in the bottom half of the frame. The next three innings were quiet as Nester faced only two batters above the minimum.
Forbes lead off the sixth inning with a triple to center field before Logan Morris singled up the middle to tie up the ball game. NC State had a runner in scoring position in the seventh inning thanks to a sac bunt from Sack, but two ground outs ended the inning.
With the international tie breaker rule in effect, Russ was placed at second to begin the eighth inning. With a ball hit to the short stop by Forbes, Russ ran into the fielder and was called out before two back-to-back ground outs ended the Pack's scoring opportunity.
Kentucky used a sac bunt to move its runner to third before NC State intentionally walked the bases loaded. Autumn Humes hit a walk-off home run to left field for the Kentucky win.
MISSOURI STATE RECAP
For the second-straight game, NC State gave up the early lead with Missouri State going up 1-0 after the first inning. A big fourth inning, scored four runs off a pair of hits. Morris recorded a two-RBI single before Brigette Nordberg crushed her first homerun of the season for a 4-1 NC State lead.
Missouri State inched back within reach with a pair of runs in the fourth, 4-3, but another big inning gave NC State a four run lead, 7-3.
The Bears tried once more to claw back into the game with a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh, but a foul out and strikeout looking from Wallace ended the game.
