The 12th-ranked NC State rifle team is set to conclude its team season this weekend, Feb. 28-29, at the GARC Championships in Memphis, Tenn. Boasted by a variety of young talent, it will be the first GARC Championships for five of NC State's athletes.
Â
Friday will host the smallbore event before all teams compete in air rifle on Saturday. Each day will feature three relays, including a finals competition. The Great America Rifle Conference features several of the top rifle teams in the country – No. 1 Kentucky, No. 3 West Virginia, No. 4 Nebraska, No. 5 Akron, No. 7 Ole Miss, No. 8 Memphis, No. 10 Navy and No. 11 Army.
Â
Fresh of earning an NCAA Championship berth, freshman Makenzie Sheffield will look for a big weekend after leading NC State at the NCAA Qualifier with a 592 in air rifle. With her qualification to the 2020 NCAA Rifle Championships, it marks the fourth time in the last five seasons NC State has had an athlete qualify. Â
Â
Last season, NC State finished ninth at the event and was headlined by then-freshman, Emily Fisher. Fisher turned in a 580 in smallbore and 588 in air rifle to finish 10th in smallbore.
