
Pack Falls Short Against Tar Heels, 85-79

Markell Johnson records a double-double with 21 points and 10 assists
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men's basketball team lost to North Carolina, 85-79, Tuesday night at the Dean E. Smith Center.
With the loss NC State falls to 17-11, 8-9 in the ACC, while North Carolina improves to 11-17, 4-13 in the ACC.
Markell Johnson led the Pack with his 10th career double-double, posting team-highs in points (21) and assists (10). The Cleveland, Ohio native added a career-high tying four steals.
D.J. Funderburk fell one rebound short of a double-double with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting and nine rebounds.
C.J. Bryce added 13 points and Devon Daniels finished with 10 points.
NC State jumped out to a 10-0 lead as Johnson scored eight points in a quick start for the Pack. North Carolina scored 11 of the next 14 points to cut into its deficit, but did not take its first lead of the game until a Garrison Brooks basket gave the Tar Heels a 38-37 advantage with one minute remaining in the half.
A late scramble and lay-up by UNC gave the Tar Heels a 40-37 advantage at the break.
North Carolina scored the first bucket of the second half to take a five-point lead, but NC State rattled off six straight points to retake the lead on a Johnson lay-up. Carolina retook the lead 44-43 a possession later, but NC State answered with a 9-1 run over the next over the next three minutes to take a 52-45 lead on a Funderburk fast break lay-up with 14:45 to go.
The Pack could not keep the momentum though as the Tar Heels responded with a 22-4 run over the next six minutes to take its largest lead of the game, 67-56, with 8:33 to play.
NC State was able to cut the deficit to three, 75-72, on a Bryce three-pointer with 2:12 remaining, but could get no closer as UNC closed the game by hitting seven of its final eight foul shots.
Garrison Brooks led UNC with 30 points and nine rebounds. He finished the game 14-of-16 from the foul line.
NC State as a team was 11-of-13 from the free throw line while North Carolina was 22-of-31.
The Pack returns to action Saturday when it hosts Pitt at PNC Arena. The game will tipoff at noon and be televised on the ACC Network.
