RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men's basketball team went on a late 17-6 run to close out the Pitt Panthers, 77-73, Saturday afternoon at PNC Arena.
With the win, NC State improves to 18-11, 9-9 in the ACC while Pitt falls 15-15, 6-13 in the ACC.
Freshman forward Manny Bates posted career-highs in points (13) and rebounds (10) as he recorded his first career double-double to lead NC State. Bates finished the game 5-of-6 shooting from the field.
The ACC's blocked shot leader added five to his total on Saturday and now has 81 for the season. He ranks third on NC State's single-season block chart.
Sophomore forward Jericole Hellems and senior C.J. Bryce led the Pack with 16 points. Hellems was a perfect 6-of-6 shooting from the field, including 2-of-2 from three-point range.
D.J. Funderburk also reached double figures with 14 points and added two blocked shots. Funderburk scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half.
As a team, NC State had a season-best eight blocked shots.
The Pack faced its biggest deficit of the game, 58-51, with 10 minutes to play, but went to work on an 11-3 run to take a 62-61 lead on a Hellems three-pointer with 6:55 remaining.
Hellems scored nine of the 11 points during that run.
Pitt retook the lead on the next possession with two free throws, but NC State took the lead for a good a minute later when Bryce knocked down a three-pointer to give the Pack a 65-63.
The Panthers would never get closer as NC State held Pitt without a basket for over four minutes to extend its lead to as large as eight points in the final minutes.
After trailing 58-51 with 10 minutes to go, NC State won the final 10 minutes by a 26-15 score.
The Pack returns to action Monday night when it plays at seventh-ranked Duke. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN.
