RALEIGH – With an adjusted Friday schedule, the NC State softball team is set to host the Fairfield Crabtree Invitational this weekend, Feb. 21-23, hosting Bucknell, Indiana and Saint Joseph's.
After a spectacular performance in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge last weekend, NC State (6-4) has won four of its last five games, all at home.
SCHEDULE ADJUSTMENT
Due to expected low temperatures, several adjustments have been made to Friday's schedule. The Wolfpack will now play Bucknell at 3:15 p.m. followed by a 5:30 p.m. game against Saint Joseph's. The previously scheduled game between Saint Joseph's and Indiana has been cancelled, with Bucknell and Indiana playing at 12 p.m. now.
The schedule for Saturday and Sunday remains unchanged. For any further weather updates over the weekend, stay tuned to @PackSoftball on Twitter or NC State Softball on Facebook as well as @PackGuestServices on Twitter.
OFFENSE COMES ALIVE
NC State scored a season-high 12 runs Wednesday in a 12-4, six-inning victory against Elon. The Wolfpack's offense came alive with a total of four homers from four different players, including the first of the season for Angie Rizzi. Rizzi's three-run blast in the bottom of the sixth was NC State's second walk-off win in under a week, after Logan Morris also did so last weekend against Ohio State.
In addition to the four home runs, NC State also set a school single-game record seven stolen bases.
RUSS MOVES INTO SECOND ALL-TIME IN CAREER STOLEN BASES
Sam Russ, who leads NC State with 11 stolen bases this season, had a career-high three stolen bases Wednesday. With her first stolen base of the night, Russ moved into second all-time at NC State in career stolen bases before ending the night with 60. The junior is just 26 away from Shanna Smith's school record of 86.
Russ ranks fifth in the nation with 1.10 stolen bases per game and leads the ACC in addition to leading the nation in active career stolen base percentage. She is 11th among all active Division 1 players with 60 career stolen bases, second among juniors.
With an average of 1.10 stolen bases per game, Russ ranks fifth in the nation and leads the ACC. After setting the school single-season record last year with 32, Russ leads the nation in active career stolen base percentage and 11th in total stolen bases. Her 60 career stolen bases are second among active juniors.
SCOUTING OPPONENTS
Bucknell boasts a powerful trio throughout its lineup – with three batters batting above .400 including Allyse Volpe who was the Patriot League Batting Champ her freshman season. Seven of the team's nine starters have batting averages above .300, but the team is led by an experienced senior in the circle. Senior pitcher Reanne Geffert holds a 1.20 ERA with 66 strikeouts. Geffert has allowed more that one earned run only once this season. This weekend will be the first all-time meeting between the two programs.
Saint Joseph's opened its 2020 season last weekend in Orlando, Fla. with a pair of wins, including a 10-1 win over Bethune-Cookman. Freshman Erica Lawrence saw action in three of the teams first five games last weekend, tallying a .500 batting average. NC State last played the Hawks in 2011 with the Wolfpack holding a 2-1 lead in the all-time series.
Indiana has already faced three other ACC opponents this season, going 2-4 against them. The Hoosiers split a pair of games against Syracuse and defeat Clemson, 5-4, before dropping a series of games to Duke. Emily Goodin leads the Indiana pitching staff with 42.1 of the teams 55.1 innings pitched and has a 2.31 ERA with 36 strikeouts this season. Indiana and NC State have only played once in program history, dating back to 2009 where the Pack took a 3-2 win.
UP NEXT
NC State plays host to in-state rival, Duke, for a midweek contest, Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. The midweek contest will count as a non-conference game for both teams as they gear up for the opening of ACC play in March.
