RALEIGH, NC – The NC State men's basketball team heads to Chestnut Hill, Mass., in search of its third consecutive ACC road win when it takes on Boston College this weekend.
The Pack (16-7, 7-6 ACC) will face the Eagles (12-3, 6-8 ACC) on Sunday with tipoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
The game will be televised on the ACC Network with Wes Durham and Malcolm Huckaby on the call. NC State fans can also listen to Gary Hahn and Tony Haynes call the action on the Wolfpack Sports Network.
Pack Tracks
- NC State won its second consecutive road game with a 79-74 win at Syracuse on Tuesday night. The Pack closed the game with a 17-6 run. NC State faced its biggest deficit of the game at 68-62 with 6:16 to go when Devon Daniels scored 7 consecutive points to give the Pack a lead it would never relinquish.
- Junior guard Devon Daniels tied his season-high with 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting and added three steals. The Battle Creek, Mich., native has scored in double figures in seven of the last eight games and is averaging and is averaging 14.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game over the last eight outings.
- NC State has clamped down defensively in crunch time the last two games. At Miami on Feb. 5, NC State led 67-64 with 7:14 remaining and held the Hurricanes to just one field goal the rest of the way, ending the game on a 16-8 run to win, 83-72. On Tuesday at Syracuse, NC State trailed 68-62 with 6:16 to play and held the Orange to just one field goal the rest of the way, ending the game on a 17-6 run to win, 79-74.
- Freshman forward Manny Bates leads the ACC and ranks 9th in the NCAA with an average of 2.95 blocks per game. The Fayetteville, N.C., native leads the ACC in blocks in all games and blocks in ACC-games only. If Bates finishes the season in the lead in blocks, it would mark only the second time since 1977 that an NC State player led the ACC in blocks (Beejay Anya - 2.5 bpg) and the first time in program history an NC State player led the ACC in blocks in conference games. Bates broke the NC State-program record for most blocked shots by a freshman in just 15 games.
Sunday Storylines
- NC State enters Sunday having won three of its last four ACC road games. The Pack is 4-3 in road ACC contests this season. Since Kevin Keatts became head coach of NC State prior to the 2017-18 season, he has guided the Pack to 12 road ACC wins. Only Virginia's Tony Bennett, Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina's Roy Williams have more road wins in that time span. (Bennett - 20 wins; Krzyzewski - 18 wins; Williams - 14 wins)
- A win on Sunday would give the Pack three consecutive ACC road wins. NC State hasn't won three consecutive ACC road games since the final two road games of the 2002-03 season and the first ACC road game of the 2003-04 season (2/25/03-to-1/11/04).
- Senior guard Markell Johnson has passed out 20 assists in the last two games to push him back into the lead in assists in the ACC. The Cleveland, Ohio native is averaging 6.7 assists per game and has a narrow lead over Duke's Tre Jones (6.59 apg) for the conference lead. Johnson previously led the ACC in assists his sophomore season and would become the first ACC player since North Carolina's Kendall Marshall (2011 and 2012) to lead the ACC in assists in multiple seasons.
- After going through a stretch from Jan. 11 through Feb. 1 where the Pack shot under 40% in five of seven outings, NC State has shot 50 percent or better in its last two games. In the first nine games of the year 2020, NC State only shot above 30 percent from three-point range twice, but in the last two games, NC State has shot a combined 42.5% (20-of-47) from long-range.
- The Pack has forced six consecutive opponents into committing more turnovers than passing out assists. Only three ACC teams have managed to pass out more assists than commit turnovers against the Pack. NC State is 0-3 in those games and 7-3 against ACC teams when it forces an opponent to record more turnovers than assists. For the season, NC State opponents have 264 assists and 344 turnovers.
- Reverse the rebounding streak and keep Mitchell off the glass: The Pack enters Sunday's game having been outrebounded in five of its last six games. NC State ranks 12th in the ACC in rebounding margin at -1.2 per game. Boston College ranks last in the ACC in rebounding margin at -5.32 rebounds per game, but the Eagles do have Steffon Mitchell who in four career games against NC State is averaging 13.3 rebounds per game and 5.5 of those rebounds have come on the offensive end.
- Senior guard C.J. Bryce has scored 35 points in the last three halves of basketball. He scored 13 of 15 points in the second half against Louisville and had 22 points in the win over Miami on Wednesday. Bryce was averaging 16.1 points per game and was shooting over 50 percent from the field when he suffered a concussion in shootaround for the Appalachian State game on Dec. 29. He still leads the team in points per game with an average of 13.7. Prior to his 15 points against the Cardinals, Bryce hadn't scored in the last two games for NC State.
- Senior guard Markell Johnson has 13 steals in his last five games and now has 150 for his career. He ranks 13th all-time in the Pack's record book for career steals and needs 14 more to break into the top-10.
NC State - Boston College Series
- NC State leads the all-time series with Boston College, 13-11. Kevin Keatts is 3-1 against the Eagles as head coach of the Pack.
- In the last meeting between the two programs, NC State closed the regular season with a 73-47 win at Boston College on 3/9/19. The 26-point win was the largest victory margin for NC State in an ACC road game since beating Wake Forest, 76-40, on Jan. 14, 2012.
- Boston College's 47 points and 26.7% (16-of-60) field goal shooting remain opponent lows for the Kevin Keatts era at NC State.
