NC State knocked down a season-high 14 three pointers in the win
RALEIGH – The seventh-ranked NC State women's basketball team (20-1, 9-1 ACC) extended its winning streak to six games and picked up its 20th victory of the 2019-20 season with a 79-60 win against Clemson (7-14, 3-7 ACC) inside Littlejohn Coliseum on Thursday night.
The decision secured the Wolfpack's fifth-straight 20-win season and extended the team's winning streak over the Tigers to 11 games.
NC State took advantage of Clemson's zone with a consistent night from three-point range. As a team, the Wolfpack shot 14-of-32 (.438) from beyond the arc for its most threes in a single game this season. Aislinn Konig knocked down seven alone, a single-game career high for the senior guard who now has 1,100 career points.
Konig led the Wolfpack in scoring with 23 points on the night. Kayla Jones tied her career high with 15 points, and Jakia Brown-Turner added 12 points as the Pack's third double-digit scorer.
After leading by nine at the break, NC State used another strong start to the third quarter to establish a double-digit lead that it would not relinquish for the entirety of the second half. The Wolfpack converted on its first five attempts from the field in the third quarter, which included four threes in a row in the first two and a half minutes.
NC State went 6-of-8 (.750) from long range in the first quarter alone to establish a four-point advantage (22-18) after the opening period. The Pack's six first-quarter threes marked the most triples it has knocked down in a single quarter this season.
Clemson scored the first four of the second quarter to tie the score at 22, but NC State then held the Tigers scoreless for a nearly five-minute stretch in the middle of the period. In that span, the Pack scored 10 unanswered points to extend its lead to double digits on three occasions. NC State led by as many as 11 points (37-26) in the first half.
The Pack led by 20 points on two occasions in the third quarter and only trailed for 23 seconds of the game's 40 minutes.
The Wolfpack continues its road stretch by making the short trip to Durham, N.C., on Sunday, Feb. 2 to take on Duke. Tip-off from Cameron Indoor Stadium is set for 2 p.m., and the game will be aired live on ACCNX.
