The Tar Heels overcame NC State's early surge, taking its first lead on a Leaky Black field goal to make it 16-14 with 13:15 to go. That started a stretch of the team's exchanging the lead 13 times the rest of the period. The game was tied at 35 in the final seconds of the half, but UNC scored a basket while being fouled and then the Tar Heels grabbed the offensive rebound and put it back in to take a 39-35 lead into the break.
The Pack scored the first points of the second half, but could never closer as UNC extended its lead to as many as 11 points in the final 20 minutes.
North Carolina led 65-55 with 8:11 to go when NC State made one last spurt, going on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to four, 65-61 on a Daniels steal and dunk with 6:36 to go.
NC State would go over four minutes without a point though as the Pack only scored four points in the final 6:36 of the game.
Garrison Brooks (25 points/11 rebounds) and Armando Bacot (11 points/11 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles to lead North Carolina.
The Tar Heels finished the game with a +11 advantage in rebounding.
