Hayden Hidlay Claims 157 Title, @PackWrestle Finishes Second at Southern Scuffle

Wolfpack has eight place on podium with top-eight showings
CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The sixth ranked NC State wrestling team had eight reach the podium at the 2020 Southern Scuffle, highlighted by a first place finish by R-Jr. Hayden Hidlay at 157 pounds.
As a team, NC State had a total of eight take a spot on the podium with top-eight finishes and the Wolfpack took second in the team race behind Oklahoma State.
Hidlay cruised to the title at 157 pounds, posting a major decision over #7 Dellavecchia of Rider in the finals. In the top-10 battle for the championship, Hidlay scored a takedown in the first, then racked up 4:47 straight of riding time the rest of the match, and included a pair of near falls for the 10-0 win.
For the tournament, Hidlay was 5-0 with all bonus point wins, outscoring his foes 50-6 including a pin.
R-Fr. Trent Hidlay came home with a second place finish at 184 pounds, his lone loss came in the finals in a top-10 battle. Hidlay won his first four matches of the tournament by a combined 35-10, but lost to #6 DePrez of Binghamton 3-2 in the finals, the lone takedown coming in the first period.
R-Jr. Daniel Bullard won four matches on the day in the consolation bracket and brought home a third place finish at 174 pounds. Falling in the quarterfinals last night, Bullard had four straight decisions, including 4-2 in OT over Foca of Finger Lakes Prep in the third place bout.
R-Jr. Thomas Bullard finished fourth at 165 pounds. Bullard advanced to the semifinals, before dropping a pair of bouts to top-13 foes. To reach the third place bout, Bullard defeated ACC rival #11 Wentzel of Pitt, 4-1.
Competing unattached at 133 pounds, freshman Kai Orine brought home a fourth place finish at 133 pounds. Orine won four of his first five bouts, including a pair of pins over seeded wrestlers, before falling to #4 Phillippi of Pitt in the third place bout.
So. Deonte Wilson claimed a seventh place finish at heavyweight with a win in the night session. Wilson got a takedown in all three periods, and downed North Dakota State's Stibial 7-2.
A pair of Wolfpack wrestlers clinched a podium finish, but each took injury defaults and finished eight at their weights. R-Jr. Tariq Wilson (141) worked his way back through the consolation bracket, while classmate Nick Reenan (197) posted an 18-7 major decision in the consolation rounds earlier in the day.
Up Next: The Southern Scuffle served as the last tournament before the postseason. NC State resumes its dual schedule next Saturday, Jan. 11 as the #6 Wolfpack will host #12 Princeton at 1 p.m. inside Reynolds Coliseum.
