NC State led by 18 points in the second half before Clemson made a late comeback
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men's basketball team held off a late Clemson rally Saturday afternoon to defeat the Tigers, 60-54, inside PNC Arena.
With the win, NC State improves to (13-5, 4-3 ACC) while Clemson falls to (9-8, 3-4 ACC).
D.J. Funderburk led the Pack with his first career double-double, posting 13 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
NC State used an extended 28-8 run in the first half to take a 13-point lead on a Devon Daniels basket in the final minute of the opening half. After jumping out to an early 5-0 lead, the Pack watched Clemson go on a 15-3 streak to take a 15-8 lead with 12:17 to left in the first half. NC State turned up the defensive pressure the rest of the half, holding the Tigers to just three made field goals in the final 12 minutes of the half to go into the locker room with a 12-point lead.
It was a game of runs in the second half.
Clemson scored the first five points of the second half to cut its deficit to seven, but NC State responded with an 11-0 run to take its largest lead of the game, 47-29, on a C.J. Bryce three-pointer with 15:16 to go.
Clemson responded to the Pack's 11-0 run with a 10-2 run, cutting NC State's lead to 49-41 on a Tevin Mack lay-up with 8:25 to go.
NC State had another response, holding Clemson without a point for over four minutes to extend the lead back to 13 points on a D.J. Funderburk lay-up with 3:36 remaining.
Clemson scored the next seven points to get within six on a Simms field goal with over a minute remaining.
The Pack patiently ticked the shot clock down on the ensuing possession and Markell Johnson found Braxton Beverly in the corner for a three-pointer as the shot clock buzzer sounded to give NC State a nine-point lead with 47 seconds to go.
The Tigers scored the next four points to get within five, but could get no closer as the Pack closed the scoring with a Daniels free throw.
Daniels, Funderburk and Johnson all scored 13 points to lead NC State. Bryce also reached double figures with 11 points.
The Pack shot just 39.2 percent from the field, only the third time this season NC State was held below 40 percent shooting, but Clemson could not take advantage as the Tigers shot 37.7 percent from the field and finished 39.1 percent (9-of-23) from the foul line.
NC State has a quick turnaround as the Pack travels to Charlottesville, Va., Monday to take on the defending National Champion Virginia Cavaliers. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN.
