RALEIGH – The ninth-ranked NC State women's basketball team (16-1, 5-1 ACC) made a statement in a ranked showdown against 13th-ranked Florida State (15-3, 4-3 ACC), defeating the visiting Seminoles 68-51 Thursday night on Kay Yow Court inside Valvano Arena at Reynolds Coliseum.
NC State led for 36:58 in a matchup that featured the ACC's top-ranked teams in field-goal percentage (Seminoles) and field-goal percentage defense (Wolfpack). The Pack held the Seminoles to just 36.2 percent from the field, which was Florida State's worst single-game shooting percentage of the season and over 11 percent lower than its season average (.473).
Florida State entered the matchup averaging 77.2 points per game and only barely cracked the 50-point mark. It was the Seminoles' lowest point production of 2019-20 and was just the second outing on the year that the team has scored under 60 points.
The Wolfpack, meanwhile, went 27-of-59 (.458) from the field and assisted on an impressive 17 of its made baskets. NC State also owned a 40-24 advantage in the paint against Florida State.
Elissa Cunane continued to show off her ability to dominate down low as she scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season. The sophomore center has now posted 20+ points in four of the last five games.
Freshman Jakia Brown-Turner put together her best outing yet as a member of the Wolfpack. She tallied career highs in points (18), rebounds (8) and three-pointers made (3) to join Cunane in double figures. Kayla Jones and Aislinn Konig added 10 points apiece to round out NC State's double-figure scorers, and Konig (6) and Jada Boyd (4) both dished out career-high numbers in assists.
NC State entered the halftime break with a 15-point lead (36-21) after holding Florida State to its lowest single-half point total of the season. In the first half, the Seminoles converted on just eight shots, while the Wolfpack shot 16-of-31 (.516) in the first 20 minutes.
The Wolfpack took its first double-digit lead of the game at the start of the second quarter and never let the Seminoles get closer than 11 points for the duration of the game. Even with an over three-minute scoring drought in the middle of the fourth quarter, NC State managed to keep Florida State at a safe distance. The Pack led by as many as 21 points (57-36) in the fourth quarter.
Florida State's Kiah Gillespie posted a game-leading 22 points, and Nausia Woolfolk joined her in double figures with 12.
NC State will be back in action at home on Sunday, Jan. 19 to host Wake Forest. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Reynolds Coliseum, and the game will be aired live on the ACC's Regional Sports Networks.
