
Volleyball Faces First Road Test at VCU Invitational

RICHMOND, Va. – Following a 2-0 opening weekend, the NC State volleyball team faces its first road test of the 2019 season, Sept. 5-7 at the VCU Invitational in Richmond, Va. The Wolfpack take on host, VCU Thursday at 6 p.m. followed by a 2:30 matchup against UC Santa Barbara on Friday. The weekend concludes Saturday with a 2 p.m. meeting with Alabama.
NC State (2-0) opened the 2019 season last week with a pair of strong performances against Austin Peay and Kansas State. The Wolfpack swept Austin Peay, 3-0, before taking a 3-1 victory over Kansas State. Melissa Evans earned Co-MVP honors following back-to-back double-digit kill performances including 19 against Kansas State. Kaylee Frazier and Jessica Kemp were also named to the All-Tournament team after Frazier led NC State with 5.57 digs per set and Kemp hit .483 on the weekend.
STACKING UP AGAINST THE ACC
After a stellar outing in week one, the Wolfpack rank among the top of the ACC in several categories. As a team, NC State leads the conference with 16.71 digs per set and is third in both assists per set (13.14) and kills per set (14.14).
A pair of players, Kaylee Frazier and Melissa Evans, also lead the conference in their respective categories. Frazier is atop the ACC with 5.57 digs per set while Evans tallies the most kills/set with 4.71. A total of six NC State players rank in the top-10, including Pam Chukwujekwu who is second with a .619 hitting percentage and Kristen McDaniels' 6.29 assists per set.
SCOUTING VCU
VCU (2-2) kicked-off its stretch of seven games in nine days last weekend were they went 1-2 at the Sports Imports Classic. The Rams dropped matches to Texas Tech and Ohio State but picked up their first win of the season against Lehigh. VCU also defeated High Point Tuesday evening.
VCU, the two-time defending regular season A-10 champs, were picked to finish second in the conference's preseason poll. The Rams fell to Dayton, 3-2, last season in the championship match of the A-10 tournament. The Wolfpack and VCU opened their season against each other a year ago with a battle in Raleigh where NC State took the 3-2 victory. Evans led the team in that match, tying a career-high 20 kills.
SCOUTING UC SANTA BARABARA
UC Santa Barbara (2-1) swept LIU before edging Wyoming, 3-2, last weekend. The Gauchos only loss came at the hands of Colorado. After finishing fourth last season in the Big West, UC Santa Barbara concluded its season in the NIVC before being picked to finish third in the Big West preseason poll.
UC Santa Barbara returns 12 letter winners and five starters from a year ago, including three-time AVCA All-American, Lindsey Ruddins. Last season, Ruddins set a program rally-scoring era record with 587 kills. The Gauchos also welcome seven newcomers to its 2019 roster. Saturday will be the first meeting between the two programs.
SCOUTING ALABAMA
Alabama (3-0) recorded back-to-back sweeps to open its season for the first since 1998, after defeating Marist and Buffalo. The Crimson Tide also took a 3-2 victory against Colgate to exit the first week of the season unscathed.
Under first-year head coach, Lindsey Devine, the Crimson Tide return 11 players from last season which includes five starters. Devine joined Alabama over the summer following 16 seasons at ETSU where she built a program that included back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances.
