NC State Shows Off Offense in Fall Opener

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team opened its 2019 fall season Saturday evening, showing off a dominant offense with a 17-0 win against Louisburg. Logan Morris led the team with a 4-for-5 performance which included six RBIs and a home run. Overall, NC State tallied 13 hits and 12 RBIs.
Sydney Nester started the game in the circle for NC State, pitching four shutout innings. Nester allowed just one hit and struck out 11 of the 14 batters she faced. Devin Wallace and Sam Gress each pitched three innings, striking out three and four, respectively. In her first game at NC State, Gress did not allow a hit.
Sam Russ scored the Pack's first run of the game in the third inning, after reaching second base on a hit by pitch and a walk. Following a walk to Brigette Nordberg, Morris delivered with a two-RBI single and a 2-0 lead. It was a four-run fourth inning for NC State before fifth inning home runs by April Visser and Sam Sack made it an 8-0 run game.
With two outs in the seventh, Skylar Johnston reached base on an error before Morris launched a two-run homer that capped off a six-run frame for a 16-0 lead. The final run of the day for NC State came in another two-out situation in the ninth with back-to-back walks once again to Russ and Nordberg. Johnston delivered with an RBI-single.
OF NOTE
NC State continues its fall schedule Sunday with a 1 p.m. game against Longwood at Dail Softball Stadium. Admission is free.

- NC State's starting lineup included six returning position players from last year's squad.
- The Pack also saw action from four freshman, Bailee Bryant, Gress, Kelsey O'Connor and Libby Whittaker in addition to transfers Carson Shaner and Sack.
- Russ, Gress and Rizzi each contributed two hits, joining Morris as one of four NC State players to have a multi-hit game
- The Pack committed just one fielding error
- Russ, who set the program single-season stolen base record a year ago, showed off her speed with two stolen bases Saturday.
