LOUISVILLE, KY. – The NC State volleyball team dropped a hard fought five-set battle to Louisville Friday evening in the team's ACC opener. Louisville (8-3, 1-0 ACC) won by set scores of 28-30, 25-12, 25-27, 25-19, 15-10.
NC State (5-8, 0-1 ACC) was led by Melissa Evans who recorded 20 kills and 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. The match was also Evans' third 20+ kill performance this season, the most in the ACC. Jessica Kemp and Jade Parchment both recorded 10 kills for the Pack.
In her first start as libero this season, Grace Irvin matched a career-high with 25 digs while also dishing out a career-high eight assists. Nina Sharpton recorded a double-double with 41 assists and a personal-best 16 digs.
"Disappointed of course in the outcome," said head coach Linda Hampton-Keith. "We always want to win but even though that didn't happen I thought our process was really good tonight. I was really proud of our team, the effort they gave, the poise that they showed and their ability to stay focused from one play to the next."
It was the second-straight five-set win for Louisville (8-3, 1-0 ACC), who was receiving votes in the latest top-25 poll. Melanie McHenry had a match-best 29 kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pack put together a complete first set, hitting .350 as a team and recording 20 kills. NC State took control early, working out to a 10-7 lead with three-straight points including a service ace from Taylor Rowland. NC State kept its three-point lead until Louisville pieced together four-straight to take a 17-16 advantage. Rowland quickly tied the match back up at 17 with a kill before a tight battle ensued that saw 11 ties and five lead changes. The Pack finally took the set after a pair of Louisville errors.
After dropping the second set, NC State rebounded in the third. Neither team took larger than a two-point lead until three-straight put Louisville up, 17-14. The Cardinals held the gap, 19-15, before NC State began chipping away. A 5-2 scoring advantage for the Pack tied the set, 21-21. After starving off two set points, NC State closed it out with three-straight including kills from Daniela McDonald and Lauryn Terry.
Louisville came back to force a fifth set after winning the fourth. Despite two less hitting attempts and only three more kills than NC State, the Cardinals came away with the victory in part due to a service ace and two Pack service errors.
UP NEXT
NC State continues the conference road swing with a matchup against Notre Dame on Sunday. The Pack play in South Bend at 1 p.m. on ACCNX.
