MILWAUKEE, Wis. – NC State men's tennis junior Tadas Babelis and sophomore Yannai Barkai defeated Arizona State's 26th-ranked Tim Ruehl and Andrea Bolla to win the doubles title at the 2019 Milwaukee Tennis Classic Monday afternoon.
The Wolfpack duo posted a perfect 5-0 record throughout the weekend of action and took down two nationally-ranked pairs over the final two rounds of action to claim the doubles crown.
Playing at the Western Racquet Club for Monday's championship, Babelis and Barkai managed to break Ruehl and Bolla on three occasions during the title match on the way to securing the 8-4 victory.
Babelis and Barkai cruised through the first two rounds of competition, picking up 8-4 wins over Chase Colton/Robert Krill (Wisconsin) and Enrique Luque Rico/Tim Zeitvogel (Pepperdine). The Wolfpack duo then overcame a 0-3 deficit to beat Mark Wallner/Pat Harper (Tennessee) by an 8-4 score to advance to the semifinals.
Their semifinal contest put them up against a ranked doubles pair for the first time this season in No. 58 Paul Barretto and Can Kaya of California. The match extended into a tiebreaker, which Babelis and Barkai ultimately took for the 9-8 (7) victory to book their spot in Monday's final.
Rafa Izquierdo Luque and Martins Rocens also represented the Pack at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic this weekend, with the tournament marking the first of both players' NC State careers. They paired up for doubles action, where they reached the round of 16 as a duo, and they both picked up their first singles victories as members of the Wolfpack roster.
NC State will turn its attention to the ITA All-American Championships, which is set for Oct. 5-13 in Tulsa, Okla. Seven members of the Wolfpack roster were selected to compete at the national tournament, which serves as a qualifying pathway to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in November.
