RALEIGH – The NC State men's soccer team unofficially begins its third season under head coach George Kiefer on Sunday evening by visiting local rival UNC for an exhibition match. Kickoff from the UNC Lacrosse & Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 8:30 pm and admission is free for all fans.
Last season, the Wolfpack made its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship for the first time since 1991 and 1992. NC State picked up its first victory in the NCAA Championship since 1994, defeating Campbell 4-1 in the opening round of the tournament. The Wolfpack recorded its first 10-win season since 2012, and posted an unbeaten 8-0-3 mark at Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh.
NC State added a strong class of signees this offseason, a group that was at one time ranked as high as sixth in the nation by soccer publication TopDrawerSoccer. Four of NC State's newcomers appeared in the 2019 Boys IMG Academy Top 150 rankings.
UNC holds a 52-22-12 lead in the series between the programs, but NC State earned a thrilling 1-0 victory over then-ranked No. 1 UNC on Oct. 12 of last season in front of a sellout crowd of 3,229 fans at Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh.
Following Sunday's exhibition at UNC, the Wolfpack will host VCU in a free exhibition on Aug. 24 before officially opening the 2019 regular season at home against Loyola on Aug. 30.
