RALEIGH, N.C. – A pair of two-run homers plated all four of NC State softball's runs as the Wolfpack (27-26, 7-15 ACC) took the series opener against Louisville (33-18, 12-10 ACC), 4-3, Friday evening at Dail Stadium.
OF NOTE:
- Logan Morris and Skylar Johnston both went yard in the first contest of the series for NC State's 15th multi-home run game of the season. With the pair of homers, the 2019 squad increased its number of single-season long balls to 61 and needs just five more to tie for fifth in program history in that category.
- Sam Russ posted her 13th multi-hit game of the season and her third in a row as she went 2-for-3 at the plate Friday evening.
- Devin Wallace showed tremendous poise in the circle as she pitched a complete game and gave up just two earned runs. The Wolfpack junior retired the first nine batters that she faced in the outing.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Morris put NC State up a pair of runs early as she hit her 11th home run of the year in the bottom of the first inning. Her one-out blast to left field drove in her and Russ, who had reached first with a leadoff single up the middle to start the frame.
- Louisville got on the board in the top of the fourth inning as Celene Funke tripled to center field and scored on a ground out to first base.
- With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Morris singled to right center before Johnston stepped up to the plate to hit one out of the park straight to center field to put NC State up 4-1.
- The Cardinals scored in each of the final two innings. Sidney Melton took third on a walk, steal and ground out to shortstop and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth.
- In the top of the seventh, Kyra Snyder singled up the middle to lead off the frame, took second and third on passed balls and came home on a wild pitch, but the Wolfpack defense held strong to get the final outs of the inning.
ON DECK:
NC State will return to action on Saturday afternoon as it matches up with Louisville for the second game of the series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from Dail Stadium, and the matchup will be broadcast live on the ACC Network Extra.
