Wolfpack Evens Series With Tar Heels, Reaches 40-Win Plateau

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 13 NC State baseball reached the 40-win plateau for the 10th time under head coach Elliott Avent on Friday evening in its 11-2 win over UNC-Chapel Hill at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Highlighted by three-run bursts in the first, fourth and sixth innings, Wolfpack evens its series with the 13th-ranked Tar Heels. The Pack improves to 40-15 on the year and 17-12 in ACC play while the Tar Heels fall to 38-16 overall and 17-12 in conference action.

Avent's Additions
"I've never been more proud of my guys," said Avent. "We didn't give that game away yesterday, but a couple of unfortunate things happened late, and you never have a 3-2 game with a good ball club like Carolina. This was the response we wanted and needed, and I'm really proud of them."

Quick Hits
-The Pack jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on four hits. Jonny Butler and Will Wilson laced back-to-back singles to start the game, then with two gone Tyler McDonough stepped up and ripped an RBI single to right field to score Butler.
-An error on the play moved him to second and brought Wilson around to make it 2-0.
-Brad Debo tacked on the third run with his RBI single to center field to drive in McDonough.
-NC State doubled its lead in the fourth, once again plating three runs on four hits. J.T. Jarrett and Butler both reached on one-out outfield singles, then Wilson's ground rule double brought the first run across.
-Evan Edwards' two-run single off the glove of the Tar Heel second baseman added to his team's lead.
-Jarrett's two-out double to the left field wall in the fourth after Dillon Cooper reached on a walk gave the Pack a 7-0 lead.
-UNC-CH got on the board in the fifth, as Dylan Harris hit a one-out triple to right field then scored on a groundout to first.
-Wilson belted his team-leading 16th home run over the left field wall in the sixth to give his team its seven-run lead back.
-McDonough also left the park in the sixth with a two-run shot to right field after Edwards drew a walk. It was his fifth of the year to increase the Pack's lead to 10-1.
-A bases-loaded wild pitch in the seventh made it 11-1.
-The Heels walked in a run in the eighth with the bases loaded.

Inside The Box Score
-Butler's 4-for-4 outing ties his career high for a single game and marks his second multi-hit game of the weekend.
-Wilson's 4-for-5 performance marks the third time this season he has tallied four in a single game, and it was his fifth multi-hit outing in the last six games.
-McDonough and Jarrett additionally tallied two hits apiece, contributing to the team's 14 on the night.
-McDonough (3), Wilson (2) and Edwards (2) all turned in multi-RBI performances.
-Friday's win marked the 16th time this season the team has scored double-digit runs.
-Three pitchers contributed to the win, led by starter Reid Johnston who went 5.1 innings and yielded one earned run on eight hits.
